Panto Review: Peter Pan at Whitley Bay Playhouse (AD)

We received complimentary press review tickets in return for an honest review.

It’s got to be said, I’ve never envisaged myself dancing along to 'One Love' and 'All Ride' by Blue in Whitley Bay, but that is exactly what happened at the end of very enjoyable panto in Whitley Bay after me and the boys were offered complimentary press review tickets earlier this month.

Peter Pan at Whitley Bay Playhouse

This was my first trip to see the Christmas Panto at Whitley Bay Playhouse, and hopefully won’t be my last. It was full of fun and laughter in a very informal and comfortable way. The audience and performers were like close friends, intimate and having fun together - just how a good panto should be.

The 2018 Christmas Pantomime presented by Blue Genie Entertainment is 'Peter Pan' starring Antony Costa from Blue and Steve Walls (I would later realise that I am in fact connected to Steve on LinkedIn – small world).

The panto itself has lots of high flying fun and in the highflying adventure, Antony Costa stars as Captain Hook, Ben Hanson, from children’s cult show Tracey Beaker, as Starkey and Steve Walls as Smee.

As I’ve said this was my Whitley Bay panto but it turns out it is Steve Walls 9th year and you can tell that the audience loves him. He also has a famous bench as I find out later in the performance.

It is not the slickest of performances, the sound was a little iffy at the start, Steve Walls had a sore throat but that didn’t matter. But the show does have some of the best special effects and use of video and visuals of any Panto, lots of flying and a host of popular songs too - as well as Blue there is The Greatest Showman and also Baby Shark - as well as pirates, Indians and mermaids.

It is suitable for all ages and my 9 and 11-year-olds loved it, they were laughing along wholeheartedly, as was I, and the rest of the audience. Last year over 25,000 people enjoyed Whitley Bay Playhouse and with shows such as this, they’ll be plenty more.

This year’s production of Peter Pan will run for 63 action-packed performances until 5th January 2019.

Tickets costing from £15 are on sale now from the Box Office and can also be purchased on the booking hotline 0844 248 1588 or online from Ticketmaster UK

Would you love to fly high like Peter Pan?
