Sunderland Restaurant Week is back this weekend from Saturday 8 until Sunday 16 September 2018, with plenty of top-notch bars, cafes and restaurants all involved again!
We were invited to a preview, a night of showcasing the best of the city’s food scene with organisers Sunderland BID where lots of eateries around the city shared with us the delights that will be on offer to customers over the next week.

From Saturday 8 until Sunday 16 September 2018 you can dine out in Sunderland for as little as £5, £10 or £15pp at over 30 pubs, cafés and restaurants in Sunderland.
Sunderland Restaurant Week is a great opportunity for diners to try somewhere new in the city, as we found when this time we went to The Albert, The Peacock, Grosvenor Casino and The Looking Glass.
The Albert
We started with nibbles and drinks at The Albert on Fawcett Street in the centre of Sunderland, which opened it's doors on the 1st December 2017 after extensive renovations transforming the previously disused basement into a venue with the feel of a traditional local pub with a modern bar. With pool tables and a comfy seating section this really is a cosy hidden gem once you venture downstairs from street level. They don’t currently serve food but worth checking out anyway!
The Peacock
Next was a return for me to The Peacock. A family-friendly pub & cultural venue serving stunning food, a fantastic range of ales, spirits & wine & offering live entertainment too. I’d last enjoyed dessert here on a previous press preview night but tonight it would be starters and just for good measure we got to try their main courses too.
Starters
- Anti pasti of olives and prosciutto ham served with artisan bread and oils
- BBQ chicken wings served with BBQ sauce
- Home made nachos served with guacamole, sour cream and salsa (v)
Mains
- Moroccan spiced beef kebab served with pilau rice
- Lemon & pesto spaghetti served with garlic bread (v)
- Traditional fish and chips served with mushy peas and tartare sauce
Grosvenor Casino Restaurant
I wasn’t expecting to visit a casino, but don't worry the only chips you need buy are edible ones! No gambling is required but you do need to be over 18 to visit this venue. This hidden treasure inside Grosvenor Casino serves up everything from salmon to steaks with a pocket-friendly price tag. And with the Eat Sunderland Restaurant Week, the prices are just getting lower…with their Cinema Meal Deal - a selected drink, meal and cinema ticket just £10 (supplements do apply to certain food items).
This saves you £2 on the usual price deal – which is pretty good in itself!
The Looking Glass
The looking glass on Athenaeum Street is offering a daytime deal of hot drink and dessert for £4. This is a magical, dreamlike, really cool place. There’s nowhere quite like it in Sunderland, with their Alice in Wonderland theme & unique decor. It is totally like stepping into Alice’s world, beautiful, I didn’t want to leave and with the offer of cake and coffee for £4 I’m desperate to return!
