How to Make Chickpea Hummus – Four Ways

This easy dip recipe is great to make sandwiches for your lunchbox, or simply to serve with breadsticks or pitta. We often have the chocolate version on toast on a morning as an alternative to the not so healthy chocolate spread. It is also lovely on a ginger or digestive biscuit too. I often have a combination of flavours for lunch with celery, olives and crispbreads too.

What is Hummus?

Hummus - a chickpea spread originated in the Middle East - although the exact origin country is unknown. Hummus is Arabic for chickpea and is an integral part of the cuisine of many countries including Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Israel and Lebanon. Loved throughout the world, it also has its own international day. International Hummus Day is celebrated on May 13th.

What’s in Hummus?

Hummus is a Levantine dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. It is popular in the Middle East and in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe. It can be made with or without the tahini. My recipe uses store cupboard items and is quick and easy to make without the tahini, but you can add if you like it that way better.

How Much Does it Cost to make Hummus?

You can but hummus in so many places but it’s just as easy to but a tin of chickpeas and whizz them up with your favourite flavourings. At around 35p for a full tin, it makes. If you buy the chickpeas dry and soak and cook them before you make them it will be even cheaper, however not so quick and easy.

Best Food Processor for Hummus

Now I don’t know, which is the best food processor for hummus? But I recently bought myself this one from Amazon (there is an affiliate link below to the one I bought).

It’s a Ninja 1200W Ultimate Chopper, Blender & Mini Food Processor and at the time was on sale at half price at around £70. And so far I love it.

Chickpea Hummus

Chickpeas, also called garbanzo beans, belong to the legume family, which includes a variety of beans, peanuts, soybeans and lentils. They are a vegan & vegetarian-friendly source of protein, a rich source of fibre and also contain vitamins and minerals and significantly boost your intake of manganese and folate. Is hummus healthy? I think so but better than that it’s also delicious.

Other recipes you might like to try made from chickpeas are Gluten Free Pizza Bases and an Egg-free Omelette. Or another vegan dip you may like to try is our dairy-free 'cheesy' nacho dip.
