Recipe: How to Make a Vegan Sausage Roll for 33p

I’m not vegan but I am vegetarian and although I do love a Greggs Cheese & Onion Pasty (sorry Bake) there’s not that much savoury stuff on offer in their stores for veggie’s, so I was as excited as all the vegans at the potential for a Greggs Sausage Roll.

Sadly I was disappointed. Not because I didn’t like them but because I couldn’t even get to try them. So rather than stay disappointed I decided to make my own.

Greggs introduced Vegan Sausage Rolls on Thursday 3 January 2019. It created great debate and some really unnecessary comments on social media – you’d think Greggs had gone completely vegan rather than just expanding their product range and meeting the needs of more customers. I don't have a problem with 'fake' meat and much of it tastes really good. I also like making veggie and vegan versions of meat dishes too like Jackfruit Peking 'Duck and Burgers.

But sadly after checking the online list for availability, I discovered that Greggs hadn’t baked enough in two of their Newcastle City Centre retail outlets. So homemade vegan sausage rolls it would have to be. I would just have to wait for another day to try the Greggs ones.

Back home in the fridge, I had Jus Rol Puff Pastry left from Christmas – a product suitable for vegans – and a packet of Linda McCartney Sausages in the freezer – again a product suitable for vegans. And literally two minutes later the sausage rolls were ready for the oven, and 20 minutes later ready to eat. In less than half-an-hour, I made 6 vegan sausage rolls for the cost of £2.

Ingredients

  • 6 Linda McCartney Sausages
  • 1 sheet of Jus Rol Puff Pastry

Method

  1. Heat over to 200C Degrees
  2. Unroll the JusRol Puff pastry
  3. Cut in half lengthways and dab water along one of the long edges on each to help the pastry stick together.
  4. Place 3 sausages is a row along the pastry and roll up.
  5. Cut into three, firmly pressing the join down.
  6. Use a knife to mark the top and glaze with wither vegan milk or vegan spread e.g Vitalite (optional but makes them go browner).
  7. Place in oven for 20 mins or until brown and sausages are cooked through.
  8. Leave to cool slightly and enjoy.

I still love that it's getting even easier to be vegan and vegetarian and buy food when out and about, but homemade vegan sausage rolls are really easy to make too.

What your favourite 'fake' food?

  1. Oh my word, this is such a simple idea. I thought you had been out buying ingredients I had never heard of. As it happens my kids like vegan sausages so I may give these a go at some point. And you're right about the attention Greggs received. Some of it was outrageous.
