Toy Review: Beasts of Balance (AD)

AD - We received a complimentary copy of Beasts for Balance in return for an honest review.

Think Jenga meets Buckaroo but even more. Think balancing towers in a magical world. And you’ll nearly be there. Beasts of Balance is a game that blends physical and digital gameplay and we received one of the games to review this Christmas.

Before you play Beasts of Balance!

Before you play make sure you download the accompanying Beasts of Balance app from the App Store or Google Play. It's free but you can't play the game without it. Please note that your smart device must meet the minimum requirements in order to use the app. Minimum requirements: iOS 10.0 (or above) or Android 5.1 (or above), Bluetooth 4.0 Low-Energy/Smart protocol, 1GB+ RAM (recommended). My old iPad that the boys have was no good but it worked fine on my iPhone.

How do you play Beasts of Balance?

You have a plinth on which you must stack animals and magical artefacts. But not just stack them you must scan them first. This then activates than in the story which you follow on a phone or tablet. Cross two animals to make a magical creature. Beware though you may need to help some animals out as they grow weak - you can power them up by matching elemental artefacts with them. My boys (9 & 11) got the hang of it much quicker than me and were saving the animals using the right objects – sometimes to no avail as the tower fell. But they just started playing again.

What do you get in Beasts of Balance?

As well as the plinth you also get a set of durable plastic “artefacts” including six beasts: a bear, an eagle, a shark, a warthog, a toucan and an octopus. Other pieces include crosses and “migration” arrows; elemental artefacts representing combinations of fire, earth, water and air; and “miracle” artefacts that are this game’s equivalent of power-ups.

5 Things to know about Beasts of Balance

1. You need a steady hand and the kids are better at it than me.
2. Having an app makes toys more appealing nowadays – or so says my 11-year-old.
3. You have to be nimble when it collapses or you are out if you don't rebuild before the volcano erupts.
4. Your kids will want to play it over and over again.
5. Play solo or in a team, either way, its lots of fun.
